2012/2013 Students of the Month
September Student of the Month
Emily Dobson was introduced by Principal Steven Ruscito as a Student Leader who will set the bar high for students to follow. She has already garnered over 200 hours of community service working on projects like the YMCA's basketball camp and hosting bible camp here in Westerly and Arizona. She is Captain of the WHS girls' volleyball team and plays on the WHS girls' basketball team. Emily said that she is very happy that Principal Ruscito has started a Special Needs basketball program and hopes to help with this program.
October Student of the Month
A Westerly High School Senior, Ross Richins is a member of the National Honor Society and enjoys physics and science. He has contributed over 110 hours of community service - a good percentage of those hours at a day camp for children in Boston. Currently, he volunteers at the Tower Street After School Program. Ross hopes to attend Bates College in the field of Dentistry.
November Student of the Month
Hannah Schilke is a member of the Student Council, Swim Team, Lacrosse, National Honor Society. She is a fourth generation Westerly native and cousin to one of our previous year Students of the Month. Hannah volunteers with the Fire Department and hopes to pursue a career in Social Work.
December Student of the Month
Austin Menta is a member of the Student Council, National Honor Society, is Band Major, was 2011 RYLA Student. For his community service, Austin tutors other students at school and helps at a Nursing Home in Warwick.
January Student of the Month
Shu Hua Lin is a Senior, member of the Outdoors Club and Student Council. Community Service included creation of a mural at Westerly Middle School along with other WHS artists and currently she was the curator of a WHS Student Art Show at the Artists' Cooperative Gallery in Westerly. She has beeen accepted at the Art Institute of Boston.
February Student of the Month
Kevin Wong is a four-year Honor student and hopes to study electrical engineering. He has over 75 hours of community service at Westerly Hospital assisting with computer technology and is a member of the Academic Decathalon. Kevin plays violin and is a member of Musica Dolce.
March Student of the Month
Monique Walmsley was introduced as a very talented, smart student with interest in languages - especially French and Italian. She has volunteered many hours in the World Language Program, teaching French and Italian to 3rd and 4th grade students and has also volunteered numerous hours to raise funds for a non profit organization founded in 2002 to combat child trafficking and exploitation. Monique plans to further her studies at Providence College in Secondary Education for a career teaching French and Italian.
April Student of the Month
Celine Gouvin is a Senior at Westerly High School, a member of the National Honor Society, Rhode Island Honor Society, Cheerleader and Captain. She took the lead to put together a Unified basketball tournament for special needs students. In addition, she runs camps for the Pee Wee cheerleaders. She has applied to several colleges and hopes to study in the field of pre-med or health sciences.
May Student of the Month
Katherine Eichorn is a member of the National Honor Society. Her favorite class is Calculus II. She has between 300 to 400 hours in community service and has achieved Ambassador level as a Girl Scout. She is President of the high school Student Council, is a freshman mentor and has completed a Certified Nursing Assistant course. She hopes to study Anthropology in college but is also leaning toward a career in Nursing.
