On 23 May 2004 The Rotary Club of Westerly dedicated "Rotary Park", located on Airport Road in Westerly, Rhode Island. The Club had raised more than $130,000 to fund this project, a recreation facility which includes playground equipment for use by infants through high school age, tennis and volleyball courts for use by all ages, walking paths, garden, parking, lighting and restrooms. The project was the joint effort of the Westerly Town Council, the Town's Recreation Department , the Town's Public Works Department, the Olean Center (located next to the Park), local and state legislators and officials.
Construction on the six acre site began in September of 2000 with the support of a seven-member Recreation Board and financial assistance of the Town, the Town Council, the State Department of Environmental Management, The Rotary Club of Westerly and other benefactors. It would include, initially two playgrounds - one for all-size kids and one specifically for toddlers. It would also contain four tennis courts, two volleyball courts, walking trails and a picnic area. Plans included wheelchair excessible pathways to link the Frank Olean Center to Rotary Park. The Gardeners of Westerly designed, installed and maintains the award winning Children's Learning Garden, the only one of its kind in the state.
After then Town Council President Sam Azzinaro and former recreation board member Ted Fields brought the need of such a project to the attention of Rotarians Ted Avedesion, D J Hadden and Cal Buxton, the effort took flight to build a state-of-the art facility with the possibility of year round use. Private and business donors were recognized with plaques around the park.
Paul Duffy, the current Director of the Westerly Recreation Department, has stated in his visits to the Club that the Park is used by many groups every day. He as told the membership recently that two new tennis courts would soon be under construction.
