The Girl Scout Mission - "builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place."  Founder Juliette Gordon Low organized the first Girl Scout troop on March 12, 1912 in Savannah, Georgia and in 1950 Girl Scouts of the USA was chartered by the US Congress.  Its programs help girls "develop their full individual potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill and respect; develop values to guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision making and contribute to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others."  Girls Scouts are in 92 countries with over 100 local Girl Scout Councils.  Through membership in the "World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, Girl Scouts of USA is part of a worldwide family of 10 million girls and adults in 146 countries."
In our part of the country there are two Girl Scout camps - Camp Hoffman in West Kingston (one of the oldest in the US) and Camp Rocky Farm located in the heart of Newport.  The first Girl Scout troop in Rhode Island began in 1914 in Pawtucket and Girl Scouts of Rhode Island was chartered in 1919 by the national organization and incorporated.
