Another year has passed and we again find Elin and Rick Lawrence presenting the amazing work that they have accomplished - 1st project cost and funds raised - $24,000 - Last year $200,000 - almost 24,000 people now have water. When they began with just their home club 2.2 billion people lacked safe water. 30,000 people died due to water-related illnesses -90% were children less than 5 years old.
Project completed this past March in Xecoxol - population 1,462 (232 families) brought running water into their homes. The village first purchased land on which a Spring is located. Note that Rotarians (49-50 Clubs now participate) supply only the materials needed to build a chlorination system and vented pit latrine enclosures. Not part of the Global Grant for the water project itself, Clubs supply Cement "safe" stoves which improve the interior living space with cleaner air.
Results - 60% decrease in diseases, 10% reduction in childhood malnutrition.
Elin and Rick bring with them to Guatemala school supplies, soccer balls, dictionaries. These items are made possible with the sale of handmade beautiful beaded necklaces, bracelets, table runners, dish clothes, and bags that they bring back from Guatemala. If you missed this presentation and would like to purchase one or two of these items, please contact Rick at elawrlaw@sbcglobal.net.
