The Rotary Youth Leadership Award Program took place May 17 - 19 at Camp Rotary in Boxford, MA. This is an outdoor leadership retreat for Sophomore and Junior students with the goal to "cultivate life and leadership skills including goal setting, cultural understanding, problem solving, communication, public speaking, community building, team building and more." Since 2011 we have sponsored six students (five from Westerly HS and one from South Kingstown HS) for this very special program. This year a student from Mattapoisett, MA applied to attend but she didn't have a sponsor. So, when no Westerly High School student applied, we made the decision to sponsor Ms. Katherine Young who attends Old Rochester Regional High School in Mattapoisett. Her application came to us from Rotarian Lew Gordon who is the District 7950 RYLA Chair. Last week he forwarded a handwritten thank you note from Katherine expressing her thanks for this opportunity. It was followed on Sunday by a note which expanded on her experience:
