Susan Sedensky, above with President Kathryn, is receiving a Westerly Children's Library book.  Sue has been Executive Director of the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center for the past two years.  We were pleased to have her join us again for dinner and to have her tell us a little more about the PNC.

The Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center, founded in 1985, is a "multi-purpose facility which offers a variety of social, educational, health and human services programs with an emphasis on community spirit."   The mission of the PNC is to be the "resource for basic needs for people experiencing financial hardship; and services for seniors in need of socialization and transportation for those living in Mystic, Pawcatuck, Stonington, North Stonington and Westerly."

Sue said that over 1400 folks came to the food pantry last year for food with 500 of them coming from Westerly and along with food products, there is a "Living Supplies" section with items like diapers and a Clothing Closet with good used items.  As those original volunteers began to age, they decided that the PNC needed a Senior Center and in 2007 an addition to the building was built to provide lunches and other programs.  With a staff of 5 and about 300 volunteers, the PNC provides food, lunch, fuel assistance, financial assistance, transport, social and health needs,  Funding comes from grants and other donations.  They also maintain a garden to grow fresh produce for the clients.  They have also started some cooking classes.
